The Brief
In highly dynamic work environments, severe accidents are rarely isolated events. They are typically preceded by dozens of near-misses, safety protocol violations, and critical situations. The problem with today's camera systems is that they are entirely reactive. Footage is often only reviewed after the worst has happened, usually just for forensic documentation and legal steps.
With our funded project ActiveSafe, we are closing this signal gap. We transform passive camera systems into intelligent assistants that detect hazards in real-time and intervene before lives are put at risk.

Beyond Object Detection
Traditional computer vision merely sees objects without understanding context, leading to high false positive rates and systems that are impossible to trust for instant interventions.
Most conventional safety systems only see the outcome: a recorded injury or fatality. They miss the most valuable safety signals that occur right before an incident, such as a near miss with a forklift, a missing hard hat, or an obstructed pathway. Our Hybrid AI architecture solves this by combining rapid object detection with deep contextual reasoning.

Heavy machinery and humans work closely together here in highly dynamic environments where the layout changes daily. With ActiveSafe, we are developing an adaptive safety system built specifically for these demanding conditions. At the same time, this funding allows us to create high-quality jobs for AI experts right here in Kiel.
